چکیده

Tree Wrapping Grammar (TWG) has been proposed in the context of formalizing the syntactic inventory of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG). It is close to Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG) while capturing predicate-argument dependencies in a more appropriate way and being able to deal with discontinuous constituents in a more general way. This paper is concerned with the formal properties of TWG. More particularly, it considers k-TWG, a constrained form of TWG. We show that for every k-TWG, a simple Context-Free Tree Grammar (CFTG) of rank k can be constructed, which is in turn equivalent to a well-nested Linear Context-Free Rewriting System (LCFRS) of fan-out k + 1. This shows that, when formalizing a grammar theory such as RRG, which is based on thorough and broad empirical research, we obtain a grammar formalism that is mildly context-sensitive.

Gender Differences in Students’ and Teachers’ Perceptions of the Role of Grammar Instruction and Corrective Feedback

This paper explores male and female students' and teachers' perceptions of the role of grammar instruction and corrective feedback. A questionnaire, administered to 60 male and female intermediate EFL students (30 males and 30 females) and 40 teachers (20 males and 20 females), elicited student and teacher perceptions concerning the role of explicit grammar instruction and corrective feedback i...

Reassembling Formal Features in Articles by L1 Persian Learners of L2 English

There  has  been  considerable  debate  over  what  the  sources  of  morphological  variation  in  second  language acquisition  are.  From  among  various  hypotheses  put  forth  on  the  topic,  the  feature  reassembly  hypothesis (Lardiere, 2005) assumes that it is the reconfiguration of features in the L2 which causes variation between the performance of natives and non-natives. FG 2007 : The 12 th conference on Formal Grammar Dublin , Ireland August 4 - 5 , 2007

We show that the class of level-k control languages, as defined by Weir, is properly included in the class of 2k−1-multiple context-free languages for each k ≥ 2. The proof of inclusion uses a representation of the set of derivation trees for a level-k control language in terms of a second-order abstract categorial grammar.

THE SIXTH JAPANESE-KOREAN JOINT CONFERENCE ON FORMAL LINGUISTICS ,1991 Unification in Unification-based Grammar

In the computational linguistics area, after Kay's adopting of feature structures and their unification to manipulate syntactic structures[KAY79], a lot of unification-based grammar formalisms have been issued such as FUG[KAY82] , LFG[BRE82] , GPSG[GAZ85] , PATRII[SHI86], HPSG[P0L87], etc.. Nowadays, an unification of feature structures is known as one of the most effective and powerful means t...
